Types of volunteer roles

You can browse our projects and their available volunteer positions according to specific types of roles. Please refer to following descriptions on what each role is about. You can also browse specific volunteer positions under each category on the left hand sidebar.

Teacher

We believe education as freedom, as an opportunity for better future, and as a means to enrich people’s lives. We have been struggling to make education more accessible to people of all age, belief and their origin. Now you can help our network projects and local people by getting involved in teaching English, surfing, skateboarding, music, art, health/ hygiene and sports. You can teach and empower kids, women and men. Teaching positions are available in the cities and also in the mountains!

Teaching itself is also a two-way process – you learn while you teach others, and in many cases, you learn even more than what you teach!

For these positions, prospective volunteers are expected to have experience in teaching or working with or looking after children, be fully fluent in English to teach English or have skills in arts, sports or music to teach these subjects and need intermediate Spanish to teach individual reading and writing in Spanish. Good level of Spanish is a must for teaching positions in the mountains, where nobody else speaks English!

Teaching Assistant

This position is ideal for volunteers who want to get involved in education projects, but don’t have significant experience in relevant subjects or good Spanish skills, although any experience in teaching and working with children would be an advantage. Volunteers can help out in the classrooms in kindergarten/ primary school, where there are average 25-35 kids for just one teacher. Volunteers can also support teachers and children at schools for special needs children.

Construction/ maintenance

Position openings in the area of Construction/ maintenance depend on the schedule of our network projects. So, please check our postings on a regular basis to get the latest info on construction projects. Volunteers for this position are expected to have experience & interest in relevant field, and also physically fit for the tasks.

Farming/ gardening

Working in the farms in the mountains enables volunteers to get first-hand experience in the reality of people’s lives in very remote villages, and to become a part of their struggles to make a living and build a better future for themselves and their children.

Volunteers for this position are expected to be physically fit, and have interests in organic farming and community development. Relevant experience would be an advantage, but not mandatory. It is also indispensable for volunteers to be flexible and adaptable to live in primitive living conditions, and have understanding of/ are sympathetic to local culture.

Social Work

We support local initiatives that offer assistance to local people in various social issues such as gender, domestic violence, juvenile delinquency, child/ youth development, public health, etc. Our partners vary from small local initiatives to governmental organizations.

Volunteers interested in this area must have relevant academic and/ or professional experience, and also have good level of Spanish. Long term commitment can be an advantage.

Animal Care

We also support shelter for abandoned animals. The shelter is always in need of support, as one half-time work is not enough to feed, and give love and attention to around 40 dogs in the shelter!

Volunteers must be animal loving! Volunteers must be adaptable and also flexible to work with limited resources. Relevant academic & professional background (veterinarian, etc) would be an advantage, but not mandatory.
