Wawa Wasi Wawa Wasi

Project Overview

Located in Huanchaquito, Wawa Wasi (children’s home in Quechua) is a day nursery service for the children aged from 6 months to 4 years, provided by Ministry of Women of Peruvian government. During the week days, some reliable mothers from the local community look after, feed, and teach children (especially those in extreme poverty) while their parents are at work, or they cannot afford good quality food for their children. Wawa Wasi is the only ongoing program that aims to ensure proper and safe environment for children’s growth.

This program has 4 main objectives as listed below;

Health: Wawa Wasi strives to protect and improve children’s health, and to guarantee healthy and neat facilities.

Nutrition: Wawa Wasi provides children with decent, fresh and healthy food at least 3 meals per day (out of 5 needed by children in the age group) for their proper growth.

Early education: Wawa Wasi also offers various basic educational programs for the development of autonomy, socialization and learning ability of children through social and physical activities. They also use “home education, very practical and intuitive ways to learn by discovering your surrounding environment.

Enhanced Security: Wawa Wasi offers safe and comfort facilities & environment where children can play to develop their abilities without any risks of abuse or kidnap.

With the help from volunteers, Wawa Wasi envisions to take more active role in growth and early education of children in Huanchaquito, and also to maintain personalized contact with them, paying close attention to their particular needs. Volunteers are also expected to help out with any challenges and issues needed to get done.

Volunteer Roles/ Working Hour

-          Help sort out toys and stuff before and after children stay in.

-          Tide-up the whole facility.

-          Look after children at all times, avoiding unsafe situations.

-          Feed the kids carefully.

-          Maintain close contact with children who have socialization issues.

-          Take part in all the activities organized by Wawa Wasi.

-          The opening hour of the facility is from 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday, and Volunteers can choose their working hour (within 20 hours per week)


Volunteer Requirements

  • Spanish Level to Start project: Bassic
  • Time Commitment: Min. 2 weeks
  • Females between 20 and 50 years old.
  • Strong sense of responsibility - you are dealing with someone else’s children!
  • High energy levels to cope with all the planned activities.
  • Flexibility and patience, children have their very unique ways to be.
  • Own initiative to do things under minimum supervision
  • Good mood for playing around a lot.
